Biography

When you talk football in North Attleboro there is almost always a Kummer story as part of every conversation. After all, there is at least one person who actually believes that "Hawkeye'''' Kummer invented the game. Kurt Kummer, the youngest of four boys, is the fourth member of a proud football family to be inducted into the Attleboro Area Hall of Fame. Kurt was a fullback and linebacker during the seasons of 1982 and 1983 at N.A.H.S.

It was in 1982 that Kummer established himself at linebacker for the Rocketeers. At 6', 185 pounds, his quickness and football instincts made him a natural for the position. He was one of the team's leading tacklers with 28 tackles, 14 assists, and 2 pass interceptions. He was an important part of a defense that allowed the opponents only 8 points per game.

It was during the season of 1983 that Kurt Kummer emerged as a strong 2 way performer. His running, blocking, and pass catching ability made Kurt an offensive weapon. He was North's leading scorer with 8 touchdowns, 6 rushing and 2 receiving. He was the lead blocker for Hall of Fame running back Frank Strachan, and providing valuable pass protection for Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Johnson.

Kurt scored two touchdowns in a 32-6 win over Canton. The following week he scored two more in a 28-12 victory at Mansfield. In his final two games at North he scored a TD in each, one in a 13-0 win over Oliver Ames and the other in a 33-0 win over Attleboro.

Kummer suffered a separated shoulder against Sharon, the second game of the year. As a result, Coach Beaupre was forced to use Kurt sparingly on defense. When the opponent reached North's 20 yard line Kummer would assume his linebacker position. His presence was usually enough to stem the tide. Coach Beaupre was quoted at season's end, "A healthy Kurt Kummer is the key to our defense."

After his final season, Kurt was selected as a Sun Chronicle All Star. He is currently the varsity football coach at Seekonk High School, where he is in the process of building a winning tradition.
