Biography

In these days of specialization in sports Kevin Phipps would indeed be unique. He played many different positions on a couple of very successful North teams. During the seasons of 60, 61 and 62, whenever Coach Ed Marx needed a dependable hard-nosed player he would look to Phipps.

Over the course of three years Kevin saw duty on the offensive side of the ball as a guard, running back, end and quarterback. On defense he settled in as a linebacker. His special team skills included being the snapper on the punt team and the kicker on the kick-off team.

Defensively Phipps was an outstanding linebacker on North's 1961 Bristol County League Championship team and the 1962 undefeated team. As a senior he anchored a defense that allowed just 36 points. He was outstanding in a scoreless tie against Bishop Stang. One of the classic games in North football history.

Offensively Kevin was a prime target of Hall of Famer Billy Richards' passes. In a 42-6 victory over Coyle he caught two touchdown passes. In a 44-6 victory over New Bedford Yoke he was on the receiving end of a 75 yard touchdown pass. In that same game he stepped in at quarterback and threw a 20 yard scoring strike of his own.

The versatility of Kevin Phipps on the gridiron was indeed unique. His ability to excel at all aspects of the game made him a very valuable player for the Red and White.
