Biography

The 1990 season saw North Attleboro record 10 victories, gain a share of the Hockomock League title, and fall a single point shy of the Super Bowl berth. One of the key two-way players leading the Rocketeers was lineman Derek Herber.

At 5-10, 215 pounds, Derek was not a big kid, but he was certainly strong. As a two-year starter at nose guard, Herb was involved in 93 tackles, recovered three fumbles, recorded 1 interception, and helped anchor a defense which held North's opponents to an incredible 34 points his entire senior season.

One of the major strengths on the 1990 squad was the right side of the offensive line. Herber's quickness at guard was the perfect compliment to the size and power of 6'7" Brian Vandenberge and future pro Chris Sullivan at tight end. This terrific trio helped produce 3,200 yards in total offense, average 5 yards per rush, and allow QB Brian Sankey to throw 16 TD passes.

"Herb" saved some of his best moments against his cross-town rivals. In a shutout over Bishop Feehan in 1990, Derek led North's "D" with 5 1/2 tackles in the 20-0 victory. And in his final high school game against Attleboro at Tozier Cassidy Field, Herber recorded 4 tackles, recovered a fumble, and then etched himself in Thanksgiving Day lore forever when he dramatically rumbled 70 yards past the North bench and fans for a touchdown as time expired, icing a 52-6 thrashing of the Bombardiers.

Derek was named a 1990 Sun Chronicle and Hockomock League All-Star and has since returned to North High where he teaches history and coaches football and track.
