Biography

As a three year starter at quarterback for the Attleboro High Blue Bombardiers, Jim Hanewich attempted more passes, completed more passes, gained more yardage, and threw for more touchdowns than any other player in AHS history. Blessed with a corps of outstanding receivers, the talented and determined Hanewich overcame inexperience, blitzing defenses, injuries, and illnesses to become Eastern Massachusetts' most prolific quarterback and a 1987 First Team Boston Globe All Scholastic selection. Jim's outstanding career totals include 349 pass completions for 4332 yards gained and 32 touchdowns. The product of a great Attleboro area football family, Jim Hanewich joins his father and coach Chet Hanewich and his brother Mark in the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame.

As a more experienced and more efficient senior quarterback, Hanewich "filled the air with passes" as Attleboro fought through a tough 5-4-1 season with loads of highlight film plays. In an opening game 27-0 win over Stang, Hanewich completed 16 of 28 pass attempts for 192 yards and four touchdowns. Jim followed that performance with a 16 for 32 effort good for 178 yards and 3 TDs as Attleboro overwhelmed Somerset 42-35. Later Hanewich led AHS to an exciting 21-20 win over cross town rival Bishop Feehan with 22 pass completions for a total of 244 yards and two touchdowns. In a disappointing 20-20 tie with Coyle Cassidy, Hanewich was 17 for 32 for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns and a 2 yd. run for a TD. Even in a 28-6 loss to Durfee the consistent and steady Hanewich was 20 out of 36 for 268 yards and one TD. Jim finished the year with 148 completions in 300 attempts for a total of 2077 yards gained and 18 touchdowns.

In addition to the Globe selection, Jim was selected as an All Sun Chronicle All Star and an All Southeastern Mass Conference All Star where it was stated that" as a senior the talented Hanewich improved his mobility, and his ability to read defenses, and completed 49% of his passes while facing a blitzing defense on every play."
