Biography

steve_mayer.jpg

Athletic trainers have no stats, but they make plenty of them. From 1989 to 2001 Steve Mayer, “Mr. Mayer” to all AHS football players, made stats. He didn’t make them by running down the field or throwing passes, but by getting the Bombardier players that you read about in the Sun Chronicle on the field.

Mr. Mayer was always there to treat an injury or encourage a Blue & White player to take the next step to get back on the field. However, whenever AHS needed a rally Mr. Mayer pulled out the white towel that all AHS football players knew well, and started to wave it at the AHS faithful to inspire them. You could count on it every time the Bombers needed a boost.

In 1990 Mr. Mayer saved a young man’s life after the first session of football camp. The player came in from practice and passed out in the hall way of the dorm. As an EMT Steve knew exactly what to do. The player was extremely dehydrated and Steve took the necessary steps to save his life. This situation was something that every player in that camp will never forget because they first heard the panic, and then heard Mr. Mayer take charge and save his life. If you ask the AHS coaching staff during Steve’s tenure they will tell you many stories about Steve taking charge and always providing the best care to assure the preparedness and safety of each Big Blue player.

Steve was a great friend and dedicated to the highest level. There wasn’t a vacation day that was more important to him than attending an AHS practice or game.

In between his commitment to football Mr. Mayer was a firefighter, and his love for both Attleboro football and the Attleboro Fire Department was equally passionate. He would always leave one and then go to the other, no matter what time of day it was. If you asked every AHS football player to say something about Mr. Mayer they would say… “Thank you!”

Steve Mayer passed away on November 5, 2010. He is survived by his children Jason (AHS ’92), Eric (AHS ’94) and Stacey (AHS ’95).
