Biography

Gary Flynn was a cornerstone for the first varsity football team that Bishop Feehan High School ever fielded. As a sophomore Flynn scored the winning touchdown in the school's first varsity win 14-8 over Provincetown in 1962. A 5'7", 140 pound halfback on offense and nose tackle on defense, Gary's modest size was offset by his lion-like heart. As a junior his 57 yards rushing on 15 carries in the school's first Thanksgiving Day game in 1963 against perennial Rhode Island powerhouse Cumberland, set the tone for a stellar senior year. Flynn was instrumental defensively as the Shamrocks recorded their first Bristol County League victory 21-16 over Coyle High School in 1964. He followed this performance with a game winning touchdown in a 12-6 victory in a first ever meeting with rival North Anleboro.

Two years after his graduation in 1965, Gary was killed on September 13, 1967, while serving his country as a Marine in the Vietnam War. Gary's memory has been immortalized with an award in his name that is given annually to the Bishop Feehan football player who like Gary provided his school with "inspiring leadership, cooperation, significant contributions, loyalty, diligence and dedication."

Receiving the award on Gary's behalf is his mother Doris Flynn.
