Biography

Mike Schmidt was a tough two-way player for North during the 1975 and 1976 football seasons. Schmidt saw limited action as a sophomore on North's 1974 Super Bowl Team. His experience with this dedicated group of seniors was a very positive influence on the success that Mike would have the next two years.

Mike was a starter on defense for the 1975 North eleven. He quickly became an important part of a defense on a team that returned only five starters. In a 32-22 win over Oliver Ames Schmidt had 7 tackles and 5 assists. Against Attleboro he made a huge defensive play when he hauled down the Attleboro quarterback to stymy a 2 point conversion and preserve a 22-22 tie.

Mike really came into his own in the season of 1976. It was Ray Beaupre's first year at the helm and Schmidt was instrumental in making it a successful one. From his linebacker position he made 56 tackles and assisted on 66 more. Offensively, from his fullback position, he carried the ball 75 times averaging more than 5 yards a carry, and scoring four touchdowns. Coach Beaupre would sometimes use Mike at the quarterback position in short yardage situations taking advantage of his size and power. In a 27-0 win over Oliver Ames Mike scored twice on runs of 16 and 5 yards. Defensively his best game was a 21-20 upset victory over undefeated Mansfield. Schmidt was tenacious, leading North to one of their greatest wins in school history.

Mike Schmidt was recognized for his defensive ability by being named a Hockomock League All-Star at the conclusion of the 1976 season.
