Biography

As a sophomore Mitch Meyer got a good taste of what the tradition of Big Red Football was all about. He saw some action on special teams and played quite often during the fourth quarter of games when North had a comfortable lead. One of those games was North’s second Super Bowl win, a 33-6 win over Greater Lawrence.

Mitch learned his lessons well. As a junior he was the starting center on an offensive line that opened numerous holes for Hall of Famers Mark Rioux and Dan Delvecchio. At 5’7” and 150 pounds the diminutive Meyer was quick off the ball. His toughness more than made up for his lack of size. It was these two qualities which enabled Meyer to develop into a defensive standout as a linebacker.

Mitch was a tri-captain of the 1976 Rocketeers. He was the only returning starter on the offensive line which promoted this quote from first year Coach Ray Beaupre. “He helped us a great deal during the early stages of the season with the development of our younger players.” His experience and leadership helped North’s offense put 171 points on the board on their way to a fine 7-3 season.

Defensively Meyer really came into his own. From his linebacker position he made 46 tackles and assisted on 42 others. One of his most impressive games was a huge 21-20 upset victory over Mansfield. The Sun-Chronicle article on the game had this quote. “Small and outsized, the Rocketeer senior literally spilled his guts for his team.”

At the conclusion of the 1976 season Meyer was named as a linebacker to the Sun-Chronicle All-Star team.
