Biography

A big, strong, naturally gifted athlete, Mark Hanewich was a two-year Bombardier starter at fullback and defensive end in 1975 aod 1976. At 6'2, 200 lbs., Co-Captain Hanewicb utilized his excellent speed and runner's vision to lead Attleboro's powerful running game. Mark, who was a product of a legendary football family, had a outstanding toughness and efficiency, consistently played with nagging injuries, and averaged 4.6 yards per carry while devastating defenses that keyed on him. Opposing coaches recognized Hanewich's powerful impact and selected Mark as the Southeastern Mass First Team All Division fullback in 1976.

Hanewich, who was selected as the 1975 Turkey Day MVP following a three touchdown performance, picked up where he left off in 1976 while leading the Bombardiers in rushing yardage and touchdowns scored during a tough 6-4 season. He led AHS over Feehan with two touchdowns, scored the only Attleboro TD in a 6-0 win over Silver Lake, returned from a first half injury to gain 40 yards in Attleboro's winning TD drive against Falmouth, and scored one touchdown, blocked a punt, and carried 17 times for 100 yards in big win over New Bedford.

Mark was no less brilliant as a two-year All Sun District All Star and All SEMC selection as a defensive end. Described as "a classic natural athlete, Hanewich was often double-reamed as opposing forces ran wide of his zone." A great all-around athlete, Mark Hanewich utilized all his many skills as a football player and will join his father, Coach Chet Hanewich in the Attleboro Area Football Hall of Fame.
